The nearest beaches are around 35 minutes drive away on the sparkling azure Adriatic coast. You’ll find coves that are perfect for snorkelling as well as long stretches of golden, sandy beaches. Our favourite is Torre Guaceto, a nature reserve with a long sandy beach and a shallow “lagoon” area, perfect for small children to swim in. Other favourites include Costa Merlata. The Ionian coast is also within easy drive and is well worth a visit.
Things to do
Worth exploring are the impressive caves at Castelano Grotte; the Roman ruins at Egnazia as well as Grottaglie, which prides itself as being one of the best artisan ceramic centres in Italy. There is also horse riding, golf and even a safari theme park not far away in Fasano. Matera, a World Heritage site, located in Italy’s Basilicata region, is a unique, memorable place and was the backdrop for Mel Gibson’s Passion of Christ. It is a town famous for its extensive cave-dwelling area, known as the sassi, which stretches back to the Neolithic age.
